The Veteran's Place

For many veterans transitioning to civilian life can be difficult. Aside from readjusting to a normal daily routine, they can find themselves struggling with post-traumatic syndrome and drug or alcohol addiction...and with being homeless. The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans estimates veterans make up 23% of the nation's homeless population. In Vermont, the Veterans Administration (VA) estimates approximately 150 former military personnel are homeless. In the fall of 2009, The Veteran’s Place, a 26-bed, transitional facility in Northfield, opened its doors to homeless veterans.

The facility is not only offering veterans a chance to regain their lives but is dedicated to making its building environmentally sustainable. The first phase in the organization's energy conservative effort was to replace its old, inefficient boiler with a state-of-the-art gas system. The next phase will be to install a wood-pellet furnace that will serve as the building's main heat source and solar panels that will heat the facility's water.
