National Life Cancer Treatment Center Opens

October 14, 2009 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The 93,000 residents of Central Vermont have a new option should they need to receive radiation therapy for cancer.

It is the National Life Cancer Treatment Center, which opened this month.

Gov. Jim Douglas spoke at the grand opening ceremony, saying the new $11 million center "will ease the lives of those fighting cancer as well as their families" by bringing treatment closer to home.

"Driving an hour to Hanover or Burlington - up to five days a week - for up to eight weeks, is a hardship for those receiving treatment," said the Governor.

The center is operated by Central Vermont Medical Center, whose CEO, Judy Tarr, singled out National Life for being the anchor of the fundraising effort. "They got us started. They helped to make this happen. We can't thank them enough," she said.

National Life CEO Mehran Assadi, who toured the facility in late August and attended this week's grand opening ceremony, said he felt great pride that National Life played such a key role in such a critical project for the community.

"This project will make a difference in the lives of so many people," he said. The center was named for National Life in recognition of its financial contribution to the cancer center - and to the hospital itself.

Former National Life CEO Deane C. Davis was a leading force behind the decision to construct the hospital in the 1960s and the company contributed $150,000 in the 1960s to launch the $1 million fundraising campaign to build CVMC.

National Life was also a major contributor to the hospital's recent modernization project. In addition, the company was a major donor of the hospital's intensive care center, which is named in honor of Deane Davis.
