Vermont Works for Women is a nonprofit organization founded in 1987 with the mission of
helping women and girls explore, pursue and excel in nontraditional careers that pay a livable wage.
Piloted in 2000, their Rosie's Girls Summer Program is a three-week summer day camp for adolescent girls (ages 11-13), designed to build self-esteem, perseverance and leadership through learning and applying basic skills in the skilled trades (e.g. carpentry, welding, electrical wiring and auto repair to name a few). Through these nontraditional activities, young girls are challenged to develop a broader sense of themselves and their capabilities, learn independence, expand their math and science skills through concrete applications, and consider careers in nontraditional fields that offer new opportunities for career satisfaction and financial stability. This year's program in Barre served 16 girls and took place over three weeks in July and August at Spaulding High School / Barre Technical Center.
"Rosie's Girls offers such a unique camp experience, I always marvel at the transformation that happens over the
three week period. Girls really gain confidence in themselves after they see they can accomplish things they never
thought possible. They and their parents are so proud to share their new knowledge and it feels so good to know we
are having an impact on their lives.
Thank you to the National Life Group Charitable Foundation for your help to make this possible."

"[Our daughter] had come home with a flyer on this camp from Barre Town school. She was very much interested in going, not the typical camp that I would send her to, however, knowing that her other peers weren't able to go, she still wanted to attend. [Our daughter] has attended many other day camps and never has she shown so much enthusiasm - when she would arrive from her day to discuss all that she had done, and looking forward to the next day with as much excitement. [Our daughter] is a rather shy girl when it comes to group things, when speaking to others or in front of others she is very quiet and almost a whisper like voice. We were so proud and excited to hear her speak so loud and clear literally for our first time at your graduation ceremony to recognize another girl’s qualities (we were sitting in the very back). Thank you for giving her the opportunities to enjoy herself." Rosie's Girls Barre Parent |
